The Grebeg Maulud tradition is the culmination of the Sekaten celebration at the Surakarta Palace, where large gunungan parades of food and other crops will be distributed to the community. There are two gunungan paraded by the courtiers, namely the jaler gunungan (male) and the estri gunungan (female). Both gunungan are then prayed for and paraded back to the courtyard of the Great Mosque to be contested by the surrounding community. The gunungan has a very deep meaning, which in each symbol means harmony in life. Gunungan jaler symbolizes longevity, prosperity, and determination. While the gunungan estri has a meaning as a symbol of women or the king's empress.
